1. How to Distinguish Original Perfume from Counterfeit

Dear customer, unfortunately counterfeiting in the perfume industry has reached a very sophisticated level. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of the following key points before making a purchase:

First: Batch Code

This is the quickest and most common method for verifying a perfume’s authenticity. Located on the bottom of the bottle and on the bottom of the box, there is a code known as the Batch Code.

Important: The code on the bottle and the code on the box must be identical. If they differ, the perfume is counterfeit.

You can verify the code on the following websites:

  • checkfresh.com — Select the brand name and enter the code
  • checkcosmetic.net — Covers most well-known brands

Note: If the code is valid, the website will display the production date and country of manufacture.

Second: Bottle and Cap

Authentic perfumes place great emphasis on detail:

  • The bottle must be completely clear and flawless — free of any bubbles, mold marks, or defects
  • The cap on original perfumes is heavy and fits on firmly — some are magnetic. On counterfeits, the cap is light and comes off easily

Third: Box and Packaging

  • Text: Examine all the writing on the box carefully. Counterfeit perfumes often contain spelling errors or inconsistent print colors
  • Cellophane wrap: The wrapping on original perfumes is tight and perfectly uniform, with neat and precise seams. If the wrap is loose or uneven, be suspicious
  • Finish: Most major brands have a special glossy coating on the top layer of their boxes

Fourth: Color of the Liquid

Reputable companies use minimal synthetic dyes. If the perfume’s color:

  • Is significantly darker than what appears on the brand’s official website
  • Contains cloudiness or fine particles
  • Differs from what you have seen before

…it may be counterfeit.

Fifth: Performance

An original perfume has three stages:

StageNameDuration
🔝 First stageTop Note5–15 minutes
💛 Middle stageHeart Note3–4 hours
🔵 Final stageBase NoteLong-lasting

⚠️ Sign of a counterfeit: A fake perfume initially emits a strong alcoholic smell and quickly transitions into an unpleasant odor. An original perfume transitions gradually and smoothly between the three stages.

Important advice: Always purchase from a reputable and trusted retailer. Counterfeiting has now reached a level where no single method alone can guarantee authenticity — use a combination of the methods above.

Note: Sometimes a perfume is genuine but smells slightly different from what you remember. This does not necessarily mean it is counterfeit — brands periodically reformulate their fragrances due to health regulations or ingredient changes.

2. Perfume Types and Concentration Levels

Concentration — referred to as Concentration — is the most important factor determining a perfume’s longevity and price. The higher the concentration, the longer it lasts.

TypeConcentrationLongevityPrice Range
Parfum / Extrait20% – 40%9 – 16 hoursVery high
Eau de Parfum (EDP)15% – 20%6 – 9 hoursHigh
Eau de Toilette (EDT)5% – 15%4 – 6 hoursModerate
Eau de Cologne (EDC)2% – 5%2 – 4 hoursBudget-friendly

Note: These figures are approximate, not exact — different brands use different ratios. This comparison is for general guidance only.

3. Perfume Shelf Life

⏳ Shelf Life of an Unopened Perfume

A perfume has its own inherent characteristics and does not begin to deteriorate until the bottle is first used. Inside an unopened perfume, there is an air seal that acts as a barrier, preventing the breakdown of its components.

Important: An unopened perfume stored in appropriate conditions can remain preserved for 3 to 5 years, or even longer.

⏳ Shelf Life of an Opened Perfume

After first use, look for the following symbols on the box:

  • 12M — months after opening
  • 24M — months after opening
  • 36M — months after opening

The primary enemies of perfume: Excessive heat, excessive cold, and direct sunlight. These degrade a perfume rapidly, regardless of the expiry date printed on the box.

4. How to Make Your Perfume Last Longer

Apply after showering Apply your perfume immediately after stepping out of the shower. At that moment, the skin is clean and the pores are open, allowing the fragrance to be better absorbed and to last longer.

Moisturize beforehand Using an unscented lotion or a lotion from the same brand before applying perfume creates a base that helps the scent adhere to the skin and last longer.

Apply to pulse points Areas where blood vessels are close to the skin’s surface generate more heat, which diffuses the fragrance more effectively:

💧 Wrists 💧 Inner wrists 💧 Neck 💧 Behind the ears

Difference between men and women: Women are generally better off applying perfume to the neck and ear areas, as their skin tends to be less dry and absorbs fragrance better. Men are better off applying to the chest and wrist areas.

Spray from 15 to 25 cm away Spraying too close to the skin can mix and potentially irritate it. Spraying too far causes the fragrance to dissipate before reaching the skin.

3 to 5 sprays — no more Overuse only reduces effectiveness and can be unpleasant to those around you.

Apply to your wallet, shoulders, and keys Items you carry daily absorb fragrance well and have a noticeable impact on how the scent diffuses throughout the day.

Avoid the following:

  • ❌ Rubbing your wrists together after spraying — this breaks down the fragrance compounds
  • ❌ Spraying directly onto hair — perfume dries hair out
  • ❌ Fanning the perfume — this causes the fragrance to lose its effect

Note: Several personal factors influence how long a perfume lasts, and these vary from person to person: body temperature, perspiration, diet, clothing type, and work environment. All of these play a role.

5. How to Store Your Perfume

Proper storage has a significant impact on maintaining perfume quality over a long period.

✅ Do:

  • Store in a cool, dark, and dry place
  • Always replace the cap securely after each use
  • Keep your perfumes in a dedicated, separate space

❌ Don’t:

  • Leave perfume in your car — especially in summer, excessive heat degrades the fragrance
  • Leave perfume in direct sunlight
  • Store in the refrigerator — extreme cold and humidity fluctuations have a damaging effect
  • Store in the bathroom — heat and steam during showers degrade the fragrance

Best storage location: A cool, dark room is the ideal place to store perfumes. Some people even keep the original box and store the bottle inside it for added protection.
